AHCCCS created and incorporated a tribal consultation policy as a result of the formal direction issued by former Governor Janet Napolitano in 2006. As a result, Tribal Consultation has been implemented on many AHCCCS program and policy changes.
AHCCCS and Indian Tribes in the State of Arizona share the common goal of decreasing health disparities and maximizing access to critical health services. In order to achieve this goal, AHCCCS has made it essential to engage in open, continuous, and meaningful consultation on a government-to-government basis with the Indian Tribes. The consultation consists of ongoing information exchange and mutual understanding which is meant to lead to informed decision-making.
AHCCCS reviews the Tribal Consultation Policy each year and submits a report to the Governor’s Office on Tribal Relations to describe all action undertaken as a result of the implementation of the Policy.
On Oct. 19 from 1-4 pm, AHCCCS will host a virtual special tribal consultation over Zoom.
