This COVID-19 Conversations webinar will delve into the considerations being weighed before reopening colleges and universities in fall 2020. This will include the role of testing and contact tracing, if sports can safely resume, responding to outbreaks, and other strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while allowing the continuation of education.
Crystal Watson, Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, will lead the introduction, followed by a panel of experts, including:
- Robert Robbins – President, University of Arizona
- Aminta Breaux – President, Bowie State University
- Julio Frenk – President, University of Miami
- Eloy Ortiz Oakley – Chancellor, California Community Colleges
The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the webinar audience.
In this webinar interdisciplinary speakers will discuss the impact of the pandemic upon diverse vulnerable populations, including Black/African Americans, Latinx and Native American communities, people with disabilities, immigrants, people who are incarcerated, older adults, nursing home residents, and people who suffer from homelessness. The central role of palliative care across all systems will be addressed and a trauma-informed perspective in working with those affected by the pandemic, as well as the critical importance of workforce education and training.
The moderator for this event will be Heather A. Hatcher, Esq., MPH, Member, New York City Bar Association Health Law and Science and Law Committees.
The presenters include:
- Mary Beth Morrissey, Esq., PhD, MPH, NYSBA HLS Public Health Law Committee Co-Chair, Member, New York City Bar Association Immigration and Nationality Committee and Immediate Past Chair, Bioethical Issues Committee, FLGEC, and Collaborative for Palliative Care
- Christopher Comfort, MD, Calvary Hospital, Collaborative for Palliative Care
- Thomas Caprio, MD, University of Rochester, FLGEC
- Geoff-Kagan Trenchard, Esq., NYC Anti-Violence Project, Former member, New York City Bar Association Immigration and Nationality Law Committee
This webinar, coordinated by the Better Care Playbook and made possible through the Seven Foundation Collaborative, will explore opportunities for health systems and plans to work with community health workers to support high-need individuals, with a focus on addressing the long-term impacts of COVID-19. Currently this pandemic disproportionately impacts high-risk populations and communities of color, and community health workers play a valuable role in providing critical supports for people with complex health and social needs and addressing health disparities.
Featured speakers will describe the roles and value of community health workers, share implementation and sustainable financing strategies, and discuss how community health worker programs can be established and expanded to mitigate the negative effects of COVID-19 on high-risk populations.
As part of the 2020 Fall Conference “Healthcare 2021: What Now? What Next?”, AZHFMA is proud to provide continuing education for Revenue Cycle professionals aiming to take the CRCR certification exam, or those simply wanting to expand their understanding of this critical function.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health is hosting a webinar on Thursday, September 17, 2020 on the impact of COVID-19 among minority communities. The Advancing the Response to COVID-19: Sharing Promising Programs and Practices for Racial and Ethnic Minority Communities virtual symposium will feature promising practices, programs, and strategies for combatting the pandemic in order to achieve health equity in communities of color.
By bringing health professionals, community leaders and public policy leaders together, the Office of Minority Health virtual symposium will host a meaningful exchange of actionable ideas for responding to the pandemic through the examination of a wide range of topics, including:
- COVID-19 racial and ethnic data and data-informed response
- How health equity can drive state, territorial, and tribal COVID-19 response
- Community-based and culturally appropriate approaches for addressing COVID-19 among racial and ethnic minority populations
Dr. Weil is a world-renowned physician and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine who has long advocated the anti-inflammatory lifestyle to improve health and wellness.
Participants will learn how to reduce inflammation and boost the body’s natural defense mechanisms. He will also describe how compounds in the cannabis plant, such as CBD, THC and terpenes (aromatic oils), work together as powerful anti-inflammatory agents.
“For the past several years, I’ve had the great pleasure of hosting the Maui Medical Cannabis Symposium as chief science officer for Maui Grown Therapies,” explained Dr. Weil.
“Although the pandemic has altered our meeting plans this year, our need to learn how to boost immunity using nature’s proven methods has never been greater. That’s why we are planning to present more medical cannabis experts online through the Maui Grown Mana’o educational series.”
Dr. Weil chairs Maui Grown Therapies’ Science & Medical Advisory Board and has served as the company’s chief science officer since 2015.
He is a clinical professor of internal medicine and founder and director of the Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He earned both his medical degree and his undergraduate degree in biology (botany) from Harvard University.
Weil is also the founder of True Food Kitchen, a national restaurant chain that features fresh, seasonal organic ingredients in its dishes. The restaurants are grounded in Dr. Weil’s philosophy that food should make people feel better, not worse.
Maui Grown Therapies is Hawaii’s first state-licensed medical cannabis dispensary. The patient-centered, physician-led company includes medical doctors, scientists, researchers, local business leaders and a highly-trained kama’aina staff.
Weil chairs the company’s Science & Medical Advisory Board (SMA) comprised of physicians, researchers, and agriculturists. SMA members continuously review the latest research about the medical use of cannabis and advise Maui Grown Therapies on product mix and formulations for Hawaii’s qualifying conditions.
