A new workshop series called ‘REAL TALK’ hopes to offer much needed support by engaging in an open and honest dialogue nationwide among Black and Brown communities about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
The virtual workshop is a monthly series of two-hour sessions and include storytelling by caregivers, presentations by dementia experts, a question-and-answer panel, and an online “resource room” filled with information.
The next session, “Essentials of Planning” – in Caregiver Role will be held at 10 a.m. (MST) on Saturday, February 5.

Stories of Lived Experiences
Arthena Caston; Jay Reinstein
What if you could gain some insight into your loved one’s journey with dementia? That’s exactly what our guests Arthena Caston and Jay Reinstein are hoping to offer in this session. They are currently living with early onset Alzheimer’s disease and members of the National Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association. They share their stories and how they have embraced this next chapter of their lives. You’ll be inspired to hear how they have found new purpose, a way to reinvent themselves and offer perspective and support to anyone on this journey. They encourage others to keep communicating, exercising, accept help, take your prescribed medications, and work with your health team to ensure a higher quality of life. Stay positive and you can live well with this disease. They also offer their experience as caregivers for each other and other loved ones. This illuminating session brings caregiving and living with dementia to practical light.

Concluding the Series – Continuing Your Journey
Five (5) sessions, Ten (10) hours, Six (6) expert presenters (including two (2) persons living with dementia). Eight (8) experiential stories of challenges, courage, compassion, and love. A Resources Room full of information access to resources about caring for others and self-care.
This final two hours of the Series summarizes what you heard in the previous ten hours as the expert presenters return to participate in an audience led Q & A interactive format to hear your questions, provide answers, summarize key content “takeaways”.
Send/bring your questions and feedback. Now is the time to ask about what you may have missed, or wish was covered. Two hours of “what else would you like to hear about being the best dementia caregiver you can be for the person depending on and deserving of your gift of caregiving”.
In some kind of a return to normalcy, the 2023 Winter State of the State breakfast meeting will be held once again at the Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak, formerly known as the Hilton Squaw Peak Resort, it was the conference host for two decades from 2000 to 2020.
Join us Friday, February 17, 2023, and get up to speed on all things healthcare while networking with friends and colleagues in person. Don’t worry, we also have a virtual option for those who cannot be there with us.
Networking and Breakfast: 7am-8am

The annual conference is hosted and moderated by Jim Hammond, publisher of The Hertel Report and Professional Healthcare Solutions’ managing consultant. Jim will share his take on the news and big changes coming in healthcare; updating the audience on Arizona’s health insurance market, Medicare, Medicaid, ACOs, and more.
Joining Jim this year is Charlton Wilson, MD, former CMO at Mercy Care and a recent Robert Wood Johnson Policy fellow. Dr. Wilson will recap his year in Washington D.C. working with congressional committees and learning about the lawmaking and law-shaping process.
Chief Medical Officer Mark Stephan, MD and Seth Dubry, MD, Arizona Medical Director at Equality Health, will also join us to discuss how the value-based network prioritizes meeting people where they are, empowers primary care providers and acknowledges cultural competency in the delivery of care and support.
And, finally, Paul Rose, CEO of Western Asset Protection, is returning again by popular demand. Paul is an expert in all things Arizona Medicare, including supplements, Part D and Medicare Advantage. Paul will share an insider’s view into Arizona’s new plans, sales efforts and winners and losers from the current Medicare open enrollment period.
