Valleywise Health Leads Nation in Low Psychiatric Readmission Rate

October 23rd, 2024 Paula Blankenship Arizona News, Open

Reports have shown Arizona is falling far behind the pack on adult mental healthcare and ranks among the lowest in the country because of its prevalence of mental illness and limited access to mental healthcare. According to CMS data, the nation’s highest psychiatric readmission rate was 35% in contrast to a 13.4% readmission rate at Valleywise Health, the fifth lowest rate in the country.

According to Valleywise Health patients are far less likely to be readmitted within 30 days of an inpatient stay because of the non-profit health system’s skilled behavioral health staff and the organization’s holistic approach to treatment.

The winning recipe according to the Valleywise Health press release is that psychiatric inpatient providers work full-time and as a leading teaching hospital, patients benefit from the expertise of both residents and their supervising doctors. And addressing both physical and psychological needs helps along with smaller caseloads for social workers to allow more time to  engage loved ones in discharge planning to support patient recovery.

Valleywise Health’s Senior Vice President of Behavioral Health Gene Cavallo,

Facing a serious mental illness is a daunting challenge. And it’s not something anyone should do alone. Our staff is committed to excellence in helping every patient and patient family with compassion and empathy.
