The Public Charge Rule and the Threat to Public Health
February 20 | 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. EST (11:00 AM – 12:30 PM Arizona)
Under the Department of Homeland Security’s Public Charge Rule, U.S. immigrants who receive non-cash “public benefits,” including most forms of Medicaid, can be denied a green card because they are deemed to be a “public charge.” With the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent order allowing the Final Rule to go into effect while legal challenges make their way through the lower courts, many poor and low-income individuals will now face increased scrutiny when applying for a green card. Attend this webinar to learn about the legal aspects of the Public Charge Rule and its impact on public health.
Moderator:
- Leila Barraza, J.D., M.P.H., AzPHA Member & Consultant, Network for Public Health Law—Western Region Office
Presenters:
- April Shaw, PhD, J.D., Staff Attorney, Network for Public Health Law—Western Region Office
- Justin J. Lowe, J.D., Legal Director, Health Law Advocates
- Holly Straut-Eppsteiner, PhD, Research Program Manager, National Immigration Law Center

This year’s theme is “Creating Connections. Achieving Results.”
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, ACHIEVE 2020 – the 13th annual Health Current Summit & Trade Show – will be 100 percent virtual. The new conference format promises to deliver the same great information that past attendees have grown accustom to receiving. This year’s event features a variety of presentations on a range of topics, including an HIE update on new technologies and services; the latest HIT legislative and legal updates; use cases by HIE participants; and panel discussions on multiple topics, including Arizona’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Don Rucker, MD, National Coordinator, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, (ONC) is the Keynote Speaker and will kick off the conference October 13.
After the virtual event series this year, we will have the 2021 Health Current Summit & Trade Show, October 12 – 13, 2021 at the Renaissance Phoenix/Glendale, Arizona.
Sessions & Speakers Highlights
Health Current Update
EMS Use of HIE on 911 Calls, Treat & Refer Programs
HIEs, Interoperability & COVID-19 Support
Sponsored Session: Banner University Health Plan
Population Health in a Value-Based World
HIE Use Cases & Success Stories: Hospital Perspectives
We understand this year will be our first year hosting a virtual conference series and thank you in advance for your continued support.
Health Current, Arizona’s health information exchange (HIE), has grown more than 700 percent since 2016. This growth is not only in numbers, but also diversity. Today, Health Current participants represent a broad spectrum of the healthcare landscape, from first responders, reference labs, hospitals, community providers and behavioral health providers to long-term care facilities, home care and hospice providers.
HIE growth reflects the connections created through the Arizona healthcare community, in both technology and positive relationships. These connections lead to more complete patient information that helps clinicians make better decisions to improve care and outcomes. Integrating HIE data into clinical workflows helps providers in all settings achieve results.
Join AzPHA Friday, February 26, at 9am, for an exclusive event, reviewing and discussing the book “A Culture of Caring; A suicide prevention guide for schools,” with the author, Theodora Schiro.
The AZPHA Professional Development Committee has organized a Book Club, and each year picks 3-4 books to read as a group and meet virtually to review and discuss, improving our knowledge and awareness of different public health topics.
This will be its first ZOOM event, in the current era of COVID-19, to virtually meet and discuss a text. On this occasion, they are very excited to announce that the author, Theodora Schiro, will be joining the group to answer questions and highlight key elements.
Eric Tomlon, Kelli Donley Williams, and Zeruiah Buchanan, AZPHA Board Members, will moderate the discussion. Kelli and Zeruiah lead the state’s suicide prevention team at AHCCCS.
Schiro, a retired Arizona administrator and educator, lost her son Joss to suicide in 2011. This book was written with her loss and profession in mind; what tools can educators use to identify students and colleagues who may be struggling with suicidal ideation.
As a teacher and school administrator for more than 36 years, she now has dedicated herself to increase awareness of depression and other mental health disorders by educating school personnel in suicide prevention. We are excited to have her join our Book Club discussion and highlight this very, very important topic during a time in public health where students have experienced a much different school year and could face periods of future remote learning.
For more information about the book and the topic please visit https://www.theodoraschiro.com/book.html.
For more information on the book club and future events, please contact Eric Tomlon, Director of Professional Development, at [email protected].
