It was our honor to work with Fresh Start Women’s Foundation at our 2019 Women Lead HERe conference. By joining us a breakout session leader and philanthropic partner, we had the opportunity to get to know the organization and truly understand the impact they have within our community.
Since 1992, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation has transformed lives by providing education, resources and support to women in all walks of life. If you would like to personally support this valuable community resource – or if you know someone who would benefit from the services it provides – please visit their website here.
A huge thank you to Rebecca Christ and Built From Scratch Studios for capturing the energy and essence of our 2019 Women Lead HERe conference.
Leaders from all sectors of health care are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their organizations to achieve strategic goals, and confidence in the technology’s promise is growing. A 2020 Optum survey on AI in health care found that 59% of respondents expect a full return on their AI investments in under three years, nearly double the 31% who answered similarly in 2018.
Health care’s Quadruple Aim is to simultaneously improve health outcomes, enhance and simplify the experiences of both patients and providers, and reduce overall costs — and AI is seen as an integral tool to help achieve it. The risk is that predictive models may unintentionally perpetuate harmful racial and gender biases that directly impact a patient’s health or access to care. In order to overcome these challenges, health care organizations need to acknowledge their existence—and take proactive steps to promote equity by examining both the data these models interpret and how the models are being applied.
In this VB Live event, you’ll learn more about how AI can help health care experts do their jobs more efficiently and effectively, and how stakeholders throughout health care can use AI responsibly, ethically, and equitably. Plus, you’ll get an in-depth perspective on the strengths and limitations of data, AI methodology, the application of AI results, and more.
– What it means to use advanced analytics “responsibly”
– Why responsible use is so important in health care as compared to other fields
– The steps that researchers and organizations are taking today to ensure AI is used responsibly
– What the AI-enabled health system of the future looks like and its advantages for consumers, organizations, and clinicians
Speakers:
– Brian Christian, Author, The Alignment Problem, Algorithms to Live By and The Most Human Human
– Sanji Fernando, SVP of Artificial Intelligence & Analytics Platforms, Optum
– Kyle Wiggers, AI Staff Writer, VentureBeat (moderator)
Trudy Bearden, PA-C, Senior Consultant and Telehealth Expert from Comagine Health will discuss the process of the progression from proposed rule to the final rule as well as strategies on how to digest the changes. We will also allot plenty of time for you to ask her questions directly.
Please register at www.telemedicine.arizona.edu and you’ll receive your individual Zoom link.

Dying in America: Care Options at the End of Life
Learning Objectives:
1. Briefly review why dying peacefully in America is often difficult
2. Discuss the care options available at the end of life
3. Provide a more detailed review of Medical Aid in Dying
Tom Fitch, MD, went to medical school at the University of Kansas, completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, and fellowships in Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
He practiced at Mayo Clinic’s Arizona facility for 30 years, where he cared for many patients from time of diagnosis through the end of life. He became convinced that patients with advanced cancers need more open and empathetic communication about their illness and prognosis, better supportive/symptomatic care, and truthful, compassionate, and grace-filled care as they approach the end of life. For those reasons, he became a Hospice and Palliative Medicine physician.
With a wealth of first-hand experience, Dr. Fitch believes medical aid in dying (MAID) is ethical, and should be legally available—with stringent safeguards—to competent adults who find themselves near the end of life due to a terminal illness complicated by unbearable, refractory suffering to use as their last act of free will to die with dignity.
He has joined Arizona End of Life Options to advocate for Arizona to join the other ten states (plus Washington DC) to make MAID a choice in Arizona. He himself has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and lymphoma. See Dr. Fitch’s Arizona Republic op-ed of 5/20/20: “I’m an oncologist with terminal cancer, and I support medical aid in dying. Here’s why.”
