Banner Health, Dignity Health & HonorHealth Hospitals Plus 3 VA Facilities & Mayo Clinic Earn 5 Star Quality Ratings From CMS

Dignity Health’s East Valley hospitals, Arizona’s Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and Arizona General Hospital in Mesa joined the 5-star lineup along with HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak and Banner Goldfield Medical Center in Apache Junction, the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, and VA Medical Centers in Phoenix, Prescott and Tucson. Valleywise Health Medical Center scored just one star, the lowest quality rating awarded by the federal agency.

The Center for Medicare & Medicare services’ hospital star ratings were updated May 13 and are designed to summarize hospital quality performance across several major categories of care, including mortality, patient safety, readmissions, patient experience and timely, effective care. Hospitals receive an overall rating between one and five stars based on how they perform compared to other hospitals nationwide, with higher scores indicating stronger performance across reported quality measures.

The agency provided ratings for 55 Arizona hospitals – another 50 were left unrated because new or smaller hospitals may not report enough data across all categories.
