As healthcare accelerates faster toward the digital era, healthcare retailers and players are facing the ticking clock of innovation. Walgreens recently launched Find Care Now, a platform for its mobile and online users to find local and digital healthcare with numerous services offered.
Walgreens is currently working with 17 health providers as part of an effort to be a “one-stop-shop” for consumers and their health needs. According to a press release, Find Care Now makes it easy to search for healthcare services including the following offerings:
- Neighborhood health care clinics,
- urgent care,
- lab testing,
- physician second opinions,
- and even physician house calls
- and optical and hearing services in certain markets.
The list of providers will keep growing, according to Walgreens. A statement from the company read:
“These include physicians or nurse practitioners at urgent care centers co-located at Walgreens drugstores, or at Walgreens stores that offer Healthcare Clinic or other provider retail clinic services. Other specialist offerings include behavioral health therapists, optometrists, dermatologists, hearing care professionals and diagnostic lab services in certain markets.”
By banding together with more providers, the vision is to have a platform that is a “sensible alternative” to emergency room visits and a less expensive approach for users needing medical assistance.
The Walgreens app, which makes access to Find Care Now easy, has currently over 50 million downloads and 5 million active users. The care platform has a big potential to bring those numbers up.
Forbes attributes this strategic move to the threat Amazon poses to retail brick-and-mortars offering medical services. The Walgreens platform is starting local, a sector Amazon cannot yet corner due to its fully online presence.
One look at Amazon’s current income statements or balance sheet in comparison to other health retailers such as CVS or Walgreens, and the numbers will do the intimidating. Strong healthcare networks seem to be an invaluable tool in giving the e-commerce giant a run for its money.
