Senator John McCain (R-AZ), returned to Washington from treatment for a recently diagnosed primary brain tumor to serve his state. He was a deciding vote to begin deliberation.
The action was televised, in contrast to the months of secretive closed door sessions.
Several versions to gut the Affordable Care Act have been considered and discarded. The last, best hope was the so-called “skinny repeal”. McCain made sure it failed. Earlier, Arizona’s junior Senator Jeff Flake voted for the measure.
