Dr. Bob England, veteran public health officer, to leave the end of January.
England’s entire career has been in public health. He was the state epidemiologist for the Arizona Department of Health Services prior to his 12 years with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health.
In the Phoenix Business Journal report, Dr England is quoted:
Nothing in public health is ever done by one person. I haven’t done a thing. It’s been our team that has done what we’ve been able to achieve during my tenure. I really mean that. I’m just grateful for the dedication and ability that they’ve brought to what we do.
He and his team were challenged. The county health department is the least funded in the nation, based on the number of people served. With about 4.2 million people in Maricopa County, the county health department gets almost $15 per person. The next lowest county gets $25 per person, and the average is close to $67 per person, he said.
