California’s El Camino Hospital located in the Silicon Valley just made it easier for consumers on the go to shop for medical services. According to Modern Healthcare, their online price estimator gives individuals personalized and reliable estimates for the services they are interested in or need.
The market comes from a digital, tech-savvy world where not everyone has time for a call or to wait on hold; the online estimator provides something that El Camino’s senior director of revenue cycle Terri Manifesto says is “expected.”
The service provided by Experian Health currently provides estimates for 35 lab tests, 25 imaging or radiological procedures and approximately 30 other medical services.
In efforts to increase transparency, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposed that hospitals publish their standard charges online in a machine-readable form allowing insurers and other organizations to analyze the figures. The proposal for the rule came in April in a modest stack of about 1,900 pages.
El Camino Hospital spends $18,000 annually for the service and since it was first implemented, more than 3,000 people have visited the site and received an instant-out-of-pocket cost estimate–according to Modern Healthcare.
More providers want to offer this tool on their site because patients want to weigh their options in high-deductible health plans.
