Join AzPHA Friday, February 26, at 9am, for an exclusive event, reviewing and discussing the book “A Culture of Caring; A suicide prevention guide for schools,” with the author, Theodora Schiro.
The AZPHA Professional Development Committee has organized a Book Club, and each year picks 3-4 books to read as a group and meet virtually to review and discuss, improving our knowledge and awareness of different public health topics.
This will be its first ZOOM event, in the current era of COVID-19, to virtually meet and discuss a text. On this occasion, they are very excited to announce that the author, Theodora Schiro, will be joining the group to answer questions and highlight key elements.
Eric Tomlon, Kelli Donley Williams, and Zeruiah Buchanan, AZPHA Board Members, will moderate the discussion. Kelli and Zeruiah lead the state’s suicide prevention team at AHCCCS.
Schiro, a retired Arizona administrator and educator, lost her son Joss to suicide in 2011. This book was written with her loss and profession in mind; what tools can educators use to identify students and colleagues who may be struggling with suicidal ideation.
As a teacher and school administrator for more than 36 years, she now has dedicated herself to increase awareness of depression and other mental health disorders by educating school personnel in suicide prevention. We are excited to have her join our Book Club discussion and highlight this very, very important topic during a time in public health where students have experienced a much different school year and could face periods of future remote learning.
