Deep divisions between the visions of moderate and conservative senators remain.
In the last 24 hours there has been a lot of activity in the Senate. Tuesday a vote was called on a motion to proceed with debate. 51 yes votes were required. Senator John McCain flew to Washington, though receiving treatment for a recently diagnosed primary brain tumor. He was the 49th of 50 yes votes (all Republican) and the Vice President cast the deciding 51st vote. Senator McCain then made a passionate speech to the body urging the Senate to return to its history of civil discourse and compromise on tough issues. He made Arizona proud. View his speech below:
