CMS Grants COVID Special Enrollment Period for Medicare Beneficiaries Through June

June 3rd, 2020 Paula Blankenship CMS Rules, National News, News

In response to the coronavirus, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) granted a special enrollment period (SEP) for Medicare beneficiaries through the end of June, giving Part D, Medicare Advantage and Medigap insurers an additional sales window. The SEP applies to those who were unable to enroll due to the pandemic.

The Special Enrollment Period is for those who were actively working and now seeking to enroll in Medicare because of job loss or retiring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Enrollment in Part B of Medicare guarantees Medicare supplement insurance and Part D drug coverage or a Medicare Advantage plan. For those who qualify, the opportunity to enroll runs through the end of June.

In reporting from California’s North Coast Times Standard, Doug Shaw, board chair with California Health Advocates reacted to the news,

We are thrilled by CMS’ announcement of this extra time. It is an essential protection that will save lives. Without it, thousands of Medicare eligible beneficiaries who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 would have to wait at least 12 months to get their Medicare benefits, a delay which could have serious health consequences, potentially death.

Dave Rich, CEO of Ensurem, a growing online multi-carrier insurance brokerage, notes reaching seniors during the pandemic is complicated,

The outbreak and rapid spread of the coronavirus pandemic has made normal Medicare enrollment significantly more difficult in some areas of the country. We need to reach out to seniors living in affected areas and make sure they understand the SEP.
